Dehydrated Castor Oil & DCO-FA in High-Solids Alkyds and Coatings
In the coatings and printing ink sectors, the drying capability of an oil is determined by its unsaturation profile and the presence of conjugated double bonds. Dehydrated Castor Oil (DCO) stands out among all natural and modified vegetable oils as a premier non-yellowing, rapid-drying film former.
1. The Chemistry of Thermal Dehydration
Raw castor oil is naturally a non-drying oil with an iodine value of 82–88 g I₂/100g. By heating castor oil in the presence of acidic catalysts (such as sulfuric acid, activated clays, or sulfonic acids) under vacuum at 230°C to 260°C, the hydroxyl group (-OH) at C-12 is split off with an adjacent hydrogen atom as water (H₂O).
This dehydration creates a second double bond, yielding a mixture of:
- Conjugated 9,11-octadecadienoic acid (~30% - 35%)
- Non-conjugated 9,12-octadecadienoic (linoleic) acid (~55% - 60%)
The resulting DCO exhibits an iodine value of 130 to 145 g Iâ‚‚/100g, transforming the inert oil into a premier drying oil comparable to tung oil and dehydrated linseed oil, but without their severe yellowing tendencies.
2. Why DCO Outperforms Linseed and Soya in Architectural & Industrial Finishes
Linseed oil contains high levels of linolenic acid (with three double bonds), which causes severe dark-yellowing in white enamels and interior trim paints. In contrast, DCO contains virtually zero linolenic acid. The conjugated double bonds enable rapid through-drying via free radical polymerization rather than slow surface oxidation.

- Stoving Enamels & Appliance Finishes: Provides gloss retention, hardness, and alkali resistance during heat curing.
- Electrical Insulating Varnishes: Superior dielectric properties and resistance to thermal degradation under prolonged operating voltage.

- Printing Inks: Fast setting time and high pigment wetting capability in lithographic and flexographic formulations.
